Budapest REU Math Program

2025 Program Announcement

As in the previous summers, we will again organize a research experience for undergraduates (REU) in July 2025. The core idea of the program stays the same, but we made some changes starting this year.
Some of the groups will run in Hungarian and some in English, as we expect a small number of international participants. Knowing English is not a requirement but its a plus. Only for Hungarian students there is also a study program, comments about this are in Hungarian: Idéntől lesz nem kutatós, hanem tanulós alprogram is! Itt az elvárt output egy 3-5 oldalas összefoglaló és előadás a tanultakról.
To apply, you must be currently enrolled in a BSc/MSc program in math and to have completed at least 3 semesters of it. This means that BSc freshmen can no longer apply (azaz elsősök nem jelentkezhetnek). Applicants are expected to have an excellent track record and show commitment. A tanulós témákra csak BSc hallgatók jelentkezhetnek (végzősök is).
We plan to have six groups with four participants in each. Each group is mentored by an expert researcher, selected by the organizers. A tanulós témák egy fővel is elindulhatnak.
The duration of the workshop is 30 June - 1 August (five weeks). Everyone is allowed to miss one week of it due to other engagements, but please indicate these in advance when applying. Preference is given to applicants who are more available.
The Hungarian (and EU) participants receive a salary of about 300,000 forints. International applicants who participated in the BSM program, can apply with the recommendation of a professor from BSM. Other international applicants should also attach a recommendation and include in the application email one line about their most significant mathematical achievement, like a math competition result. We hope to be able to arrange a limited number of dormitory places for all those participants who require it but everyone is responsible for their own travel arrangements and Visas.
The location of the workshop will be the Math Institute of ELTE (Pázmány Péter sétány 1/c Budapest). A tanulós program elsősorban a Rényi Intézetben lesz.
To apply, fill out this form by 13 April. Before applying, get acquainted with the available research topics and rank them according to your preferences. The study topics only need to be ranked by Hungarian applicants! Please send a short CV to the manager of the program, Áron Jánosik, to aron GUESSWHATCHARACTER janosik ANOTHERMYSTERIOUSCHARACTER hu and a person who can recommend you (no need to ask for a recommendation yet). If you have further questions about the program and the application process, make contact at the same email address.
